Zirconia is the best!!!
A teenaged girl and her visibly upset mother came into my dental office yesterday. Even before I could ask them what the problem was the girl’s mother told me that I should save her daughter. I immediately checked the girl’s vital signs and examined her teeth expecting intra oral swelling or even worse a tumor. After about ten minutes of diagnosing the patient I was still unable to find a problem. What was this life threatening condition which I was unable to see?
Accepting defeat I turned to the mother and asked her what the issue was. “Oh Doctor!! Can’t you see??? Look at her front teeth.” I had noticed that she had a Ceramic crown on her left central Incisor. But still where was this life and death situation. I told the mother,” Yes, there is a crown on that tooth. Does she have any pain in that tooth??” “Oh doctor!! Look at that crown there is a black margin on her gums and the teeth looks so artificial. Who will marry her marry her with her disfigured face.”
Heaving a sigh of relief, I had another look at the crown and it was true that there was a slight gingival discoloration, but the shade of the crown almost matched the adjacent tooth.
“I really don’t find anything much wrong with the crown but the gingival margin is slightly discolored. That’s because of the Porcelain Fused Metal Crown. If you want to avoid the discoloration and higher aesthetic value you should go for a Zirconia crown where there is no metal and only ceramic.”
“But the doctor who did this did not tell us about this option of Zirconia. One year ago, the tooth was chipped in an accident and the doctor told us that a root canal had to be done to save the tooth. After that he said we have to cap the tooth. He did not tell us about PFM or Zirconia or Metal Free Ceramic. He just went ahead and did it. She is a girl and we need to marry her off. If such a discolored tooth is seen in the front nobody will like her. Please do a Zirconia crown for that tooth.”
Seeing the mother plead so much, I didn’t argue. I took the crown out, took impressions and sent it to the lab. Four days later, I placed the Zirconia Crown.
The mother was so happy and the daughter too thanked me. I asked them to come in a year later to check for any Issues
